Cold and Warm Water Aquaculture for Socio-Economic Development and Food Security
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has an edge over other provinces by having warm water, cold water and semi-cold water areas. Quality fish seed of carp, trout and mahaseer( Tor Putitora) fish is stocked into the water bodies and fish seed is provided to private farmers for rearing brood stock. All species of cold water fish have great demand in the local as well as international markets.
Due to increasing demand of fish seed, it is essential that not only existing hatcheries shall be up-graded with enhanced fish seed production capacity but also new hatcheries shall be established to increase overall fish production through natural water and farm fisheries. If the existing resources are properly utilized, the fisheries/aquaculture sector will grow significantly not only to meet out fish requirement of people but also to contribute towards provincial economy. The project will be implemented in Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Battagram, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Torghar, D.I.Khan, Bannu, Kohat, Hangu, Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi, Nowshera, Malakand & Buner districts of the province.
The scope of the project includes; establishment of 200 trout farms in private sector in 10 districts, establishment of 400 carp fish farms in private sector in 13 districts, upgradation of 2 existing carp hatcheries in 2 districts, establishment of 3 new carp hatcheries in 3 districts, procurement of 1.2 million imported trout eyed-ova for gene pool and for replenishment of cold water bodies through quality fish seed, establishment of Fisheries Directorate and Research Center at Peshawar and Capacity building through trainings broad/scholarships in the field of fisheries/aquaculture.
The proposed cost of the project is Rs. 2.00 billion. In investment context, the proposed project has potential to offer profitable returns in quick time to the investors. Its local consumption and exports will be a major source of generation of funds. Skilled, semi-skilled labour and basic utilities are accessible in the project area.
The project provides an opportunity for the donor agencies / investors for investment and recoup the capital investment with profit. It can be executed through Joint Venture or any mean mutually agreed by the provincial government and the investor. The project is open for all the state-owned, state-supported and private entities.
The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will facilitate investors for interaction with relevant agencies and is committed to be the partner of investor by providing all the basic facilities in the execution of project. It will provide all legal and technical assistance to the investors. The government will provide assurance of money security. Moreover, the investors friendly security situation prevails in the province.
